Dentures & Partials Pontotoc, MS

Maintaining your oral health is an important job, but it’s not always an easy or straightforward one. This is perhaps especially true when the aging process, and its ever-increasing risk in the diagnosis of oral cancer and tooth decay, comes into play. As you age your mouth changes and the risk for various kinds of oral health related issues rises. This can lead to the necessary extraction of natural teeth, and leave you with the need to consider alternative tooth options in order to maintain your ability to chew, eat, swallow, and speak. When that happens, you might consider the use of dentures and partials in order to help you maintain your quality of life. This holds true, of course, for individuals who find themselves in need of replacement teeth regardless of their age. Dentures and partials could be the solution you need.

What are dentures?

Dentures are a replacement teeth solution that many individuals find themselves using when they have multiple teeth removed. Traditional dentures, also known as removable dentures, are created of an acrylic base that is colored to match your gum tissue and replacement “teeth” situated on top of said base. This kind of denture settles over your gums and stays in place through the use of suction—there are no posts or other devices that keep it in place. These are most commonly used when a patient has no more natural teeth left and needs a complete replacement solution.

In addition to dentures that settle over your gums, there are more permanent options that are situated on a series a metal posts (also known as dental implants) in your mouth. These dentures are not removable, but they stay in place much better than traditional options.

What are partials?

Sometimes patients do not lose all of their natural teeth all at once, but rather lose a few teeth in a row, leading to an expanse of empty space in their mouths. In order to help them maintain the ability to eat and speak properly, many patients will opt for partial dentures, often shortened to “partials”. Partial dentures follow the same basic structure outlined above for dentures, but they are designed to only replace the number of teeth missing. They can also often be secured to remaining teeth via the use of crowns or other options to help improve the security and functionality of the partials.

How long does it take to get partials designed?

The answer to this question depends on a few factors. If you have several teeth extracted, for example, or have otherwise experienced any trauma to your mouth, then we will need to wait until the inflammation to your gums has subsided before they can take a mold of your mouth and have your dentures created. Once they are in, we will fit them to your mouth in order to ensure that your bite is correct.
