What Leads to Severe Types of Mouth Pain?

What Leads to Severe Types of Mouth Pain?Probably one of the worst pains that a person experiences is mouth pain. Not only does it affect you when you eat or bite down on food, it can be distracting too. The following information gives you more insight about the development of this type of pain.

Toothache Pain

One of the most common causes of mouth pain is toothache pain. When a tooth hurts, it can cause you a great deal of difficulty when eating, biting down, or consuming hot or cold foods and beverages. When this type of mouth pain affects you, it is because decay has reached the pulp of the tooth - an area that is home to a tooth's nerves and connective tissues. Sometimes, to alleviate the pain, we will remove the pulp of the tooth, clean out the root canals, and seal the tooth, thereby eliminating the source of the pain.

Jaw Pain

Jaw pain can also cause the mouth to hurt. Jaw pain can result from a condition, known as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. TMD may emerge for one of various reasons, including a grinding and clenching of the teeth, called bruxism. We may prescribe a mouth guard to treat bruxism or jaw pain or suggest orthodontic treatment if the bite is misaligned. This type of pain should never be ignore, and the underlying cause should be diagnosed and treated accordingly.

Gingival Infections

If you have periodontitis, or advanced gum disease, you may also suffer from mouth pain. When gum disease advances, harmful bacteria accumulates below the gumline, causing the gums to become red, infected, and swollen. To take care of gum disease, we often perform a deep cleaning, called a scaling and root planing (SRP). This will help alleviate the pain you are experiencing and help you to follow a course of regular dental hygiene.
