Who is Likely to Have Problematic Wisdom Teeth

Some people are blessed with large jaws that allow all their teeth, including the wisdom ones, to erupt without issue. However, even if your wisdom teeth usually erupt, your dentist will still want to check to ensure they are not crowding your other teeth and causing your bite to shift.

However, some people's third molars never erupt through the gums and hence never require teeth extraction. Dentists often suggest wisdom tooth screenings for their teenage patients.

Problems That May Occur Due to Problematic Wisdom Teeth

Some people are lucky enough to preserve their wisdom teeth for the rest of their lives, but most people with wisdom teeth eventually end up at the oral surgeon. Teeth may erupt crooked or angled with insufficient space at the gum line. There is a high risk of teeth impaction or infection.

Advice on Caring for Your Third Molars

If they are not creating problems, your dentist may tell you to keep your wisdom teeth. They will advise you on keeping your mouth clean to avoid cavities and gum disease caused by infection-causing bacteria collecting around your wisdom teeth.

Ensure you brush in the back of your mouth using fluoride toothpaste. Floss around the wisdom teeth, then rub the dental floss behind the surface of the last tooth to ensure food particle removal. Keep up with your biannual dental checkups so your dentist can monitor your wisdom teeth. Dentists can use X-rays to detect problems that might not be obvious to the naked eye.
