Do Adults Need Sealants on Their Teeth Like Kids Do?

Posted on 8/24/2020 by John Black
Do Adults Need Sealants on Their Teeth Like Kids Do?Children will often have sealant placed over the biting surfaces of their teeth to better protect it from harmful bacteria that can cause tooth decay and cavities. Sealant does what its name suggests, and seals off the enamel from plaque and tartar, by creating a protective film. Dental sealants can be used on adults and is advised if you want to create another barrier between yourself and tooth decay.

Why Should an Adult Have Sealant?

Tooth decay and tooth loss are two serious complications of the oral cavity that happens in as many as 70% of adults. To prevent oral complications there are many things you can do, including regularly attending checkups, having routine cleanings, and maintaining good oral health. However, sometimes it can be difficult to keep up a near-perfect oral health condition, especially towards the back of the mouth, where the teeth can be more difficult to clean. This is why we advise sealant as a barrier to tooth decay.

It is not a necessary treatment, and an adult can easily manage to maintain good oral health without the use of sealant, providing they keep to their dental appointment, and clean their teeth properly twice a day. It is only suitable for those without cavities or crowns, as the sealant does not work on synthetic teeth. The sealant lasts around 10 years, meaning it gives protection for a long period of time.

If you are interested in sealants, contact our office and you can discuss the possibility and viability with one of our team. It is an effective measure to further protect your teeth and will help ensure even the most difficult parts of the enamel to reach will be kept clean of bacteria. You can find out how to otherwise protect your teeth during a routine check-up.
