Did You Know Your Brain Can Begin to Deteriorate If You Have Gum Disease?

Did You Know Your Brain Can Begin to Deteriorate If You Have Gum Disease? We realize that poor dental hygiene can influence the health of your entire body but most of our patients do not know this fact. The truth is gum disease can cause big problems and good oral hygiene can prevent them. Dentists know that unhealthy dental issues can indeed cause health problems such as stroke, diabetes, and heart disease and in some cases can lead to issues with pregnancy and dementia in women. The problem begins with an agglutinative material that carries bacteria called plaque. Dentists know that this plaque can build up on your teeth and then begin to infect your gum line.

Can Gum Disease Affect the Brain?

We know that because our teeth and gums are so close to our brain, the possibility does exist that gum disease can actually have a profound effect on our neurology. Dentists also know that some research has shown a connection between periodontal disease and the presence of beta-amyloid in the brain. Beta-amyloid is a protein fragment that can often wipe out the synapses in our brains and eventually coagulate and causes nerve cell death. This condition is known as Alzheimer's disease.

How Can We Protect Ourselves From This Happening?

Nobody wants this to happen to them and dentists suggest you look at your diet and exercise for an answer. Amyloid proteins are sinewy aggregates which can build up in your system and create new diseases known as amyloidosis. This entire process can be avoided by following a healthy diet and abstaining from processed foods. We always inform our patients that regular brushing and flossing, as well as a good healthy diet containing lots of fresh fruits and vegetables can really make a difference in all of this. For more information on this and all other health issues, you can call us for a consultation or just stop by at your convenience to say hello. We are always ready to help with everything dental and more.
