Types of Oral Surgery

Posted on 4/26/2021 by John Black
Types of Oral SurgeryOral surgery may seem intimidating, especially if you have dental anxiety. It is, however, not something to be frightened of since anesthesia is used during most, if not all, procedures. Since fear often comes from the unknown, we suggest overcoming it by checking out the most common oral surgeries listed below.

Dental Implant

Dental implants are a way to replace lost teeth and require extensive surgery. Metal posts are implanted into the jawbone as roots for crowns. This can be a long process and takes several months because of the healing required in between steps.

Tooth Extraction

This common oral surgery takes place because of tooth decay, infection, and cracking. This is reserved for severe cases with bone loss. Otherwise, cavity fillings and other procedures can be used to save the tooth instead of removing it. Another reason for tooth extraction is overcrowding, which takes place when teeth grow too close together. Extraction is required in order to make space.

The surgery consists of cutting bone or tissue in order to remove the damaged or infected tooth, and then closing the wound with stitches.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last teeth to develop. Sometimes, this happens without cause for concern, but often, wisdom teeth can result in pain and other difficulties, especially if they're not aligned. Often, they don't have space to grow and become impacted between the jawbone and gums. This can lead to pain, infections, and can even affect the surrounding teeth.

Wisdom tooth removal is a common surgery which consists of cutting into gums and extracting the impacted teeth. Wisdom teeth can also be removed as a preventative measure.

At South Main Dental, Dr. Anna Grace Clayton and Dr. Carter Clayton are quick to address any concerns and are happy to answer any and all questions about different oral surgeries. To set up an appointment or learn more, call us at 662-489-7768.
