Different Teeth Whitening Methods Explained

Posted on 6/21/2021 by John Black
Different Teeth Whitening Methods ExplainedTeeth whitening is an affordable and effective way to treat discoloration and brighten smiles so it's no wonder that it has become so popular over the years. With so many different methods available, people are spoilt for choice. However, this can be overwhelming – gels, strips, and trays all claim to be the easiest or most effective method. Here, we're going to break down the different teeth whitening methods so you can decide which one you want to opt for.

Whitening Gel

Teeth whitening gel is peroxide-based and is applied to teeth using a small brush. These do not work immediately, with most gels taking several days to show a noticeable difference. These results are short-lived since they last for roughly four months. Over-the-counter whitening gels are not as effective as those professionals offer since they are formulated with smaller amounts of peroxide.

Whitening Strips

Whitening strips are thin, clear strips that use whitening gel to bleach your teeth. Some prefer these since they're more convenient, but they take up a lot of time – in-office whitening usually takes less than two hours, while gels take several days. Whitening strips, however, are usually applied for two weeks, and like gels, the whitening effect lasts for only four months.

Teeth Whitening Trays

Individuals using the tray-based whitening method can either buy an over-the-counter kit or have custom-fit trays made by professionals. Like most other methods, over-the-counter products aren't as effective as professional whitening methods. Additionally, since the trays aren't made for your specific teeth, they can come loose and rub against your gums. Both expose the bleaching agent, which can cause gum irritation.
Custom-fit trays, like the ones you can get at South Main Dental, are made to fit your teeth perfectly, and provide faster results because of the more concentrated formulation.

Professional In-Office Bleaching

In-office bleaching is the fastest and most effective method, which is why so many people decide to opt for it. The procedure takes less than two hours and gives you immediate results. Your gums are also protected to avoid any irritation.

Dr. Anna Grace Clayton and Dr. Carter Clayton are experienced professionals who can ensure your safety during teeth whitening procedures. Call us at 662-489-7768 to learn more.
