Dental Technology Pontotoc, MS
At South Main Dental, we believe in adopting the latest in dental technology once it proves that it can save us time and money. When we save time and money, we can pass those savings on to our patients, making our treatments more cost-effective and faster.
Digital X-rays
Digital X-rays represent one of the most important technological milestones in the medical and dental fields in many decades. Digital X-ray allow us to take more detailed images of your mouth faster than traditional X-rays ever did. Traditional X-rays relied on X-ray film, so when we took a traditional X-ray, we had to develop it before we could view it. When we took a traditional X-ray, we would not know if something had gone wrong until after it had gone through the lengthy development process, which would often mean taking another X-ray.
Now, with the advent of digital X-rays, we can view images taken from your mouth immediately after they have been taken. Digital X-ray work in a similar way to digital photography, meaning we can view your X-ray right away, and even share it with you in high definition on a computer monitor that we have set up next to the exam chair.
Intra-Oral Camera
We use X-rays to see parts and tissue of your mouth that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to see with our naked eyes. There are still parts of your mouth that we could see with our naked eyes if only we could find the correct angle to view them from. It can be difficult to see behinds teeth and around some of the structures in the mouth, but with the intra-oral camera, we have a way to see into these hard to reach areas and share our view with you, our patients. The intra-oral camera is a small device that looks a bit like a pen with a cord attached to the end. It had a flashlight and a camera on the tip that we insert into your mouth. Using this camera, we can show you exactly what is going on in your mouth without having to use mirrors!
Ultrasonic Scalers
The ultrasonic scaler is one of the most useful tools that we use on an everyday basis. Many years ago we had to rely on dental picks to painstakingly scrape built-up plaque and tartar off of your teeth. Now, we use the ultrasonic scaler to quickly and efficiently remove plaque and tartar from your teeth.
Ultrasonic scalers use ultrasonic vibrations paired with a steady stream of fluid (usually water) to break up and wash away plaque and tartar deposits on your teeth. These vibrations result in a high-pitched squealing sound, so if we are ever cleaning your teeth and you hear some high-pitched sounds, its likely that we are using an ultrasonic scaler on your teeth!
